Olid's first win sparks United's surge past the Blades

Captain Maya le Tissier's first‑half penalty gave Man Utd Women the lead and set the tone for a dominant display, as Eva Olid celebrated her first victory since taking charge in August with a 10‑1 rout of the Sheffield United Blades in the Subway Players Cup.

Season context and scoring spree

Olid's side entered the Players Cup having secured their first point of the season in the Women's Super League on Saturday at Arsenal, after a loss to London City Lionesses and a 5‑0 drubbing by Chelsea. The narrow draw at the Emirates marked a modest improvement for a team that had struggled since the opening defeat.

Wales forward Mared Griffiths seized the spotlight with a hat‑trick, while Germany forward Lea Schuller netted a double for the Red Devils. Summer signing Rebeca Bernal also contributed two goals, and England midfielder Ella Toone added one alongside Jess Simpson. The flood of goals underscored United's attacking intent after a barren spell.

After the match Olid said, “It’s so important, our first win together. Having the possession and creating chances, it was a good match to keep building what we want to build in attack.” Manchester United travel to Durham on 30 September for the next league‑phase fixture, before hosting West Ham in the WSL on Sunday.

The 10‑1 triumph delivered United’s first victory since March and gave the Blades, who sit bottom of WSL 2, a heavy defeat. The win marks a big step forward for Olid’s side as they look to translate cup confidence into league points.
