Okafor refuses to play for Switzerland Under Yakin

In the quiet of his Leeds training ground, Noah Okafor stared at his phone, scrolling through the Instagram post that would dominate Swiss football headlines. The 26‑year‑old announced on Thursday he will no longer play for Switzerland under manager Murat Yakin, citing a broken trust after his brief 19‑minute World Cup cameo against Algeria.

Okafor's international record

Okafor has collected 26 caps for the Swiss national side since his senior debut in June 2019. His first appearance came as an 113th‑minute substitute for Haris Seferovic in a Nations League third‑place match against England. He scored his inaugural international goal on 15 November 2021 in a World Cup qualifier versus Bulgaria, a win that secured Switzerland’s automatic place at the 2022 World Cup.

At the 2026 World Cup, Okafor featured for only 19 minutes, entering as a late substitute in the round‑of‑32 victory over Algeria. He was the only Swiss player to appear in that match, highlighting his limited role despite being part of the 26‑man squad announced on 20 May 2026.

Breakdown of trust with Yakin

In a Thursday Instagram post, the 26‑year‑old declared he will no longer play for Switzerland under the current coach, Murat Yakin. He stressed the decision was unrelated to playing time, instead blaming how he felt treated by the current leadership. He emphasised that his Want to quit the squad stems from personal hurt rather than tactical disagreements, and that he will be Longer absent from the national team under Yakin.

Okafor wrote, “My decision has nothing to do with my playing time. Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken. Commitments were not kept.” He added, “When I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply,” and concluded, “In the weeks that followed, I thought a lot and decided for myself that I no longer want to play for the national team under the current manager.”

Club support and upcoming fixtures

The Swiss Football Association confirmed on Thursday that it had been informed of Okafor’s decision. A spokesperson said, “We respect his decision and wish him every success with his club.”

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke, who signed Okafor from AC Milan for £18 million in August 2025, pledged his full backing. Farke said, “He came to inform me and explained the reasons why, and I appreciate that he spoke with me beforehand… It’s more or less Noah’s decision, he has to decide what is best at this stage for his career.” He added that the club “has a home here for Noah, where he feels really comfortable, appreciated, and for us he will be a key player.”

Switzerland’s next match is on 26 September, travelling to North Macedonia for the opening game of the 2026‑27 Nations League. Murat Yakin has been in charge of the Swiss side since August 2021.

Okafor was born in Binningen to a Nigerian father and a Swiss mother. He represented Switzerland at U‑15 and U‑17 levels before making his U‑18 debut on 9 May 2018 in a 1–1 draw with Italy.
