Offside controversy erupts after Haaland’s winner shocks United

Manchester United’s 1‑0 loss to Manchester City leaves the Red Devils still in 13th place while City remain second, but the result is dominated by a contentious goal by Erling Haaland that has sparked debate across the league, with Michael Carrick and Gary Neville calling the decision staggering.

Controversial goal decision

Erling Haaland scored at the hour mark with a back‑post finish after Josko Gvardiol’s cross deflected. Many argued that Haaland, and also Enzo Fernández, were in an off‑side position when the ball was played. The Premier League Match Centre later tweeted that VAR confirmed Haaland was on‑side and that Fernández, although off‑side, did not touch the ball.

Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking at Bruno Fernandes, leaving United with ten men. Despite the numerical advantage, the Red Devils failed to create clear‑cut chances and could not equalise.

United’s reaction and league impact

Gary Neville said he needed “the off‑side law explained to me”, while Wayne Rooney insisted “surely it’s off‑side”. Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson added that a deflection off Patrick Dorgu was crucial to the ball reaching Haaland.

Michael Carrick described the decision as “a staggering explanation” and warned it set a worrying precedent. He noted United’s expected‑goals tally of 0.96 was only marginally below City’s 0.99, yet the side could not capitalise.

The Premier League’s official X account explained that VAR had checked the referee’s call of no off‑side and recommended the goal be awarded. It also clarified that Fernández, while off‑side, did not play the ball.

City remain second with 12 points from four opening games, whereas United sit 13th with four points. The result leaves United looking to improve in their next league outing.
