Official Zola joins Italy as youth activity coordinator

Will the appointment of Gianfranco Zola finally deliver the promised overhaul of Italy’s national team structure? FIGC President Giovanni Malagò announced that Zola will join coach Roberto Mancini and Technical Director Claudio Ranieri in a three‑person project to revitalise the Nazionale, with the former Chelsea, Parma and Cagliari star tasked with coordinating youth activity.

Malagò confirmed the decision during a press briefing, recalling that last week he had presented Mancini and Ranieri as the new coach and technical director and hinted at a third figure to complete the revamp. The Federation chief said the addition of Zola would fill that role and bring fresh momentum to the Azzurri project.

“Ranieri and I strongly wanted Zola, agreeing the choice with the Lega Pro President Matteo Marani, so he will continue to be the vice‑president of the Lega Pro too,” Malagò told ANSA. The quote underscores the collaborative nature of the appointment and Zola’s ongoing responsibilities within the Lega Pro structure.

He added, “Zola’s charisma, his preparation, and the efforts to help young players that were clear over these years with the Lega Pro represent the best foundations on which to build our future.” This statement highlights the qualities the Federation believes will benefit the youth system.

The confirmed role makes Zola the “co‑ordinator of the youth activity”, overseeing the Azzurri academies from the grassroots level up to the Under‑21 side. His mandate includes aligning training standards, scouting networks and development pathways across the country.

Ranieri had previously warned that youth academies have become prohibitively expensive for families, limiting opportunities for talented players. Zola’s appointment is presented as a step toward addressing those cost barriers and widening the talent pool for Italy.

Zola has served as vice‑president of the Lega Pro since February 2023 and brings a varied coaching résumé, including brief spells at West Ham United, Watford, Cagliari, Al‑Arabi and Birmingham City, as well as a stint on Maurizio Sarri’s staff at Chelsea in the 2018‑19 season.

Images captured Zola reacting before the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier between England and Italy at Wembley on 17 October 2023, symbolising his immediate integration into the Italy camp and the broader Azzurri project.
