Official Inter loan: 21‑year‑old Berenbruch to Avellino

21‑year‑old Thomas Berenbruch has officially joined Serie B side Avellino on loan from Inter, with both an option to buy and a counter‑option built into the deal, giving the Nerazzurri a safety net after his two senior appearances for the club this season.

The loan moves Berenbruch from Inter’s Under‑23 side, where he competed in Serie C, to Avellino in Serie B for the 2024‑25 campaign. He will aim to secure regular playing time in the higher division. The agreement runs until the end of the season, after which the purchase option can be exercised.

Option and counter‑option structure

The deal includes a standard option to buy at the end of the campaign, allowing Avellino to make the transfer permanent. Inter, however, have inserted a counter‑option that lets the Nerazzurri bring the midfielder back if they choose. This same mechanism was previously employed with youth product Aleksandar Stankovic when he moved to Club Brugge.

Born in Italy and holding dual German citizenship, Berenbruch has represented the Azzurrini at several youth levels. He progressed through the Inter academy before breaking into the Under‑23 squad. His multicultural background gives him eligibility for both national teams.

Inter’s management of Berenbruch

Inter are keen to retain control over Berenbruch’s development, as demonstrated during an internal pre‑season friendly where the club kept an eye on both Petar Sucic and Thomas Berenbruch. The match served as a showcase for the midfielder’s abilities ahead of his loan. Coaching staff used the game to assess his readiness for senior football.

Now 21, Berenbruch has been a regular in the Under‑23 side, featuring regularly in Serie C before stepping up to Serie B with Avellino. The promotion represents a significant increase in competition level. He will test his midfield skills against more experienced opponents.

Before committing to Avellino, the midfielder was linked with Serie A side Cagliari and Dutch club Utrecht. He ultimately chose Avellino to guarantee regular playing time. The move mirrors the pathway taken by other Inter prospects seeking first‑team exposure.

Berenbruch, a central midfielder, made two senior appearances for Inter during the 2024‑25 season. He featured in a Champions League group match against Feyenoord and in a Coppa Italia semi‑final against Milan. Those outings gave him a taste of top‑level competition.
