Official Atalanta loan Elmas from RB Leipzig in surprise move
Official Atalanta confirmation sees North Macedonia international Eljif Elmas join La Dea on loan from RB Leipzig, with an option to buy, marking his return to Serie A after six years at Napoli and a spell at Torino, where he recorded 19 goals and 13 assists in 189 league games.
Loan deal catches Atalanta off guard
Atalanta announced on Saturday that Eljif Elmas will join the club on a season‑long loan from RB Leipzig, with a future purchase option included.
Elmas’ loan was described as surprising because no media source had previously reported any negotiations for the ex‑Napoli midfielder.
The financial terms were not disclosed, confirming that the transfer fee remains private.
Familiar faces, new boss
The move reunites Elmas with Atalanta director Cristiano Giuntoli, who previously worked with him during his spell at Napoli.
However, Elmas will be under the direction of Maurizio Sarri for the first time in his career, as the Italian coach takes charge of La Dea.
The North Macedonia international will therefore experience a new tactical environment while returning to Serie A.
During his Serie A tenure, Elmas amassed 19 goals and 13 assists across 189 league appearances for Napoli and Torino.
While at Napoli, he contributed to a Coppa Italia triumph, a Serie A title and a Supercoppa Italiana victory.
Elmas spent six years with Napoli, initially from 2019 to 2024 and later returning on loan for the 2025‑26 campaign.
His time in Naples included a Champions League appearance, as captured in a November 2025 match against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Elmas is a regular member of the North Macedonia national team, bringing international experience to Atalanta.
The unexpected loan underscores how Atalanta can still secure experienced Serie A talent despite limited public speculation, reflecting the fluid nature of the current transfer market.
