ÖFB legionnaire Wanner leads PSV to a draw in the opener
Austrian legionnaire Paul Wanner, a team player of PSV Eindhoven, led the Dutch champion in the opening of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League to a 1:1 home draw against Shakhtar Donetsk. The visitors took the lead through Gleiker Mendoza, but Sergino Dest equalised shortly afterwards.
First half: visitors in the lead
In the first half, Gleiker Mendoza scored in stoppage time of the 45th minute to make it 1:0 for the visitors of Shakhtar Donetsk. The goal put Shakhtar in the lead and kept the game limited to one goal until the break.
Shortly after the break, in the 48th minute, Sergino Dest equalised for PSV. His goal secured the final score of 1:1 and saved the home team from defeat. Wanner remained on the pitch throughout the entire match.
In the evening, the Champions‑League comeback of the Turkish side from Istanbul took place, appearing in the European top tier again after eighteen years. Fenerbahçe remained at home with a draw against AS Roma.
Bryan Cristante gave the visitors from Rome the lead in the 39th minute. His goal caused the Turkish side to fall behind and dictated the flow of the game until the half‑time break.
After the break, in the 48th minute, Archie Brown scored for Fenerbahçe with a beautiful lob and levelled the match. The game ultimately ended in a 1:1 draw.
