Atletico Madrid agree 40m Joao Gomes transfer with Wolves

Atletico Madrid have agreed a €40m deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers for midfielder Joao Gomes.

The transfer centers on reinforcing Atletico’s midfield for the 2025-26 season. Joao Gomes’s Wolves contract includes a release clause activated by the Spanish side. Both clubs finalized terms pending medicals and personal conditions.

Joao Gomes, 22, joined Wolves in January 2023 for €38m from Benfica. He has made 53 appearances and scored seven goals for Wolves in all competitions.

Atletico’s midfield restructuring follows the departure of midfielder Rodrigo De Paul to Boca Juniors. De Paul’s exit leaves a void in Atletico’s central midfield ahead of next season.

The Joao Gomes agreement marks Atletico’s first major incoming transfer for 2025-26. The club plans further additions before the summer window closes.
