Northampton Town nears debt‑free future with pending investment
Northampton Town chairman Kelvin Thomas said a well‑funded group’s proposed investment is pretty much agreed and could be completed before the start of the EFL season, aiming to put the Cobblers in decent shape after a £2.995 million pre‑tax loss for the year ending June 2025.
After three seasons in the third tier, Northampton Town were relegated to League Two after finishing bottom of the League One table in 2025‑26. The club reported a pre‑tax loss of £2.995 million for the year ending June 2025, despite a record turnover of £7.541 million. Chairman Kelvin Thomas said a successful investment would render the club debt‑free. The Cobblers have won only once in their past 22 matches and appointed Chris Hogg as manager in May following Kevin Nolan's dismissal.
The proposed investment was first announced in April and is described by Thomas as coming from a “well‑funded” group. He added the deal is “pretty much agreed” but the scale of the funding has not been disclosed and the investors remain confidential. The investment is expected to be finalised ahead of the first league fixtures. The announcement was accompanied by a Getty Images photograph.
“We are in decent shape with the investment,” said Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas. He said the aim remains to have everything sorted by the season’s start, as previously promised.
Thomas explained that the agreement still requires approval from the EFL and the newly‑established Independent Football Regulator. He noted that Northampton is one of the first clubs to navigate both regulatory processes.
Some prospective investors attended a pre‑season match against Coventry City last Saturday, bringing family and friends and expressing excitement about what they saw. Their presence underscores the tangible interest behind the proposed funding.
Northampton will begin the new campaign with a League Cup tie away at Leicester City on 8 August, before opening their League Two season at home to Swindon Town on 15 August. These fixtures will test the squad ahead of the anticipated financial uplift.
During the summer transfer window the club signed seven new players, including Manchester City striker Matty Warhurst for an undisclosed fee. The additions reflect the club’s intent to strengthen the squad as it prepares for life in League Two.
