Northampton Town move closer to Pato‑led consortium after approvals
Northampton Town have confirmed an agreement with the Sports Alpha Capital consortium, which includes former Brazil forward Alexandre Pato, for a proposed shareholding acquisition, after Regulator and English Football League (EFL) gave their approvals earlier this month officially.
Consortium composition and approvals
The consortium, known as Sports Alpha Capital (SAC), brings together the former striker Alexandre Pato, the London‑based investment firm Gemcorp Capital and other investors. SAC secured Regulator (IFR) and English Football League (EFL) approvals earlier this month, clearing a major regulatory hurdle. The group had previously withdrawn from a proposed takeover of Colchester United, making the Northampton deal its first League Two investment.
Chairman Kelvin Thomas said: "As we always said, we will keep supporters updated as we progress and we are pleased that we have finalised agreements and now move to closing." He added that club transactions often take longer than hoped but the board is thrilled to be moving forward.
Founding partner Joao Xavier remarked: "We are very happy to have reached formal agreements. Obviously obtaining IFR and EFL approvals was a big step, but this is also a very important milestone, and we look forward to closing next week."
Investor representative Hugh Strange concluded: "All the investors are very excited about the opportunity to build on the excellent foundations in place to take the club forward and are looking forward to enjoying more days like the Newport game together with the supporters." The original announcement was accompanied by a View Image on the club’s website.
Pato's playing career and retirement
Pato, 37, retired from professional football, with reports differing on whether his retirement came three years ago or last year. He is best remembered for a five‑and‑a‑half‑year spell at AC Milan, where he scored 63 goals in 150 appearances and won the Serie A title in the 2010/11 season, and also featured for Chelsea, Internacional, Corinthians, Sao Paulo, Villarreal and Orlando City.
Northampton Town's recent challenges and outlook
Northampton Town finished bottom of League One last season and were relegated to the fourth tier. They are currently 17th in League Two after securing their first win of the campaign on 5 September, beating Newport at home. The victory was highlighted by the supporters who attended the Newport game with the consortium.
In April the club disclosed a pre‑tax loss just short of £3m, and chairman Kelvin Thomas previously said the proposed investment would make the club debt‑free. Chris Hogg was appointed manager in May and oversaw the signing of 13 players during the summer window, including striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City. The board hopes the new capital will strengthen the squad and stabilise finances.
Northampton Town expect to confirm completion of the shareholding process next week, moving from formal agreements to closing. The consortium’s involvement signals a new chapter for the club as it seeks to rebuild after a difficult season.
