Presenter Noa Vahle admits panic before first Spanish interview with Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal

Dutch presenter Noa Vahle faced a sudden language test when she was asked to interview 19‑year‑old Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal in Spanish ahead of the Champions League tie against Feyenoord. Vahle had originally prepared to speak with Feyenoord defender Mika Marmol in Spanish, but a call the night before changed the assignment, thrusting the rising star into her first Spanish interview.

Yamal, who helped Barcelona to a 5‑1 victory over Feyenoord with a goal and two assists, does not speak English, forcing Vahle to scramble for football‑specific vocabulary. "I spent the evening memorising words and looking up Spanish football terms," she said, describing the frantic preparation.

When Yamal entered the studio the next day, the atmosphere turned tense as everyone turned their attention to the young forward. "It was surreal – the kid is only nineteen," Vahle recalled, noting the pressure of interviewing a player who had just delivered a standout performance.

Just before the interview, Vahle experienced a brief panic moment. "I told him in Spanish, 'Sorry, you’re the first interview I’ll ever do in Spanish.' He laughed and said, 'It’ll be fine,' and actually helped me out," she explained.

During the conversation, Vahle observed that Yamal’s speech was difficult to follow. "He talks very softly, I think I only caught about a quarter of what he said," she laughed, suggesting the forward could work on his articulation for future media duties.

The incident highlights the growing linguistic challenges faced by broadcasters covering increasingly international football events, as well as the rising profile of Yamal, whose performances are drawing attention across Europe.
