Nikolaus Wurmbrand brings Euro ticket, U-21 call-up stays tricky

In the U‑21 team, Nikolaus Wurmbrand is firmly scheduled, while the squad fights for the Euro ticket and has to cope with a delicate call‑up. The jump of several talents into the starting line‑up of big clubs strengthens the U‑21 team squad for the qualifying matches against Denmark on October 2 and Wales on October 6.

Strong centre‑backs and new problem areas

The centre‑backs Schuster, Zabransky and Ndukwe remain available, but the team now also has to fill the problem areas at right‑back with Roka, in the centre with Bajlicz and in the attacking midfield with Hödl. These players bring quality and confidence, which increases the depth of the squad. The strong squad benefits from the experienced centre‑backs. The Austrian FA talents benefit from the depth.

Rapid's return to intensive talent development is reflected in five nominations for the U21‑team. In focus is the regular starter on the wing Niki Wurmbrand, a former Rapid talent who eases the concerns in attack. The strong performance of Furkan Dursun, who regularly scores for Swiss champions Thun, delivers nine scorer points in nine appearances.

A new goalkeeper before the Denmark visit

U‑21 team manager Peter Perchtold, announced by head coach Rangnick, brings in an additional goalkeeper shortly before the Danes' visit to Vienna, either Jungwirth or Zawieschitzky, who will also be available for selection.

The call‑up of Jakob Schöller remains somewhat delicate, as he is still recovering after a four‑week injury lay‑off. The centre‑back, now vice‑captain at Rapid, continues to battle recurring injuries. In addition, a serious shoulder injury occurred in the U21‑team due to an unlucky fall.
