Newport Crole's surgery shadows early season optimism
Newport Crole faces a stark setback as his ankle surgery forces him to miss the opening weeks of the 2026‑27 campaign, while Newport County remains buoyant, preparing for its inaugural cup and league fixtures and hoping to generate early momentum.
He sustained the ankle injury during a training session and underwent surgery last week. A rehabilitation programme has now begun, which will keep him out of the early stages of the new campaign.
Newport County issued a statement expressing its support. “Everyone at Newport County wishes James a successful recovery and looks forward to supporting him throughout his rehabilitation,” the club said.
Crole is a 22‑year‑old former Cardiff City youngster who joined the Exiles from Cymru Premier side Penybont midway through the 2025‑26 season. His arrival added depth to Newport’s forward line.
He made 20 League Two appearances in the second half of last season. Crole scored his first senior goal for Newport in a 2‑1 victory over Barnet in March.
Newport County will open its competitive calendar in the Carabao Cup, hosting AFC Wimbledon on Saturday 8 August at 15:00 BST. The match will test the squad without Crole.
The League Two campaign begins a week later against Rochdale at Rodney Parade on Saturday 15 August at 12:30 BST. This will be the club’s first league match of the season.
The contrast between Crole’s enforced absence and the club’s imminent fixtures underscores the challenge of maintaining momentum while coping with injury setbacks. Newport will need to adapt as the season unfolds.
