Newcastle United lock down Osula as German move collapses
Newcastle United have confirmed that Danish striker William Osula will remain at St. James' Park for the 2024‑25 season, ending months of speculation after a January move to Germany collapsed and securing a forward to fill the club’s attacking gap.
Why Newcastle need a striker
Newcastle are without European football this season, making domestic cup runs and league goals vital. The club’s strikers will be expected to share the bulk of the scoring load, and Osula is positioned to fill the gap as a more central figure.
German interest collapses, Osula stays
Throughout last season the Danish forward was heavily linked with a move to the Bundesliga, with Eintracht Frankfurt naming him a top target. A January transfer to the German club almost materialised in the closing days of the winter window, but the deal ultimately collapsed, leaving Osula on Tyneside to fight for his place at St. James' Park.
Osula finished the previous campaign with seven goals from eight starts and built on that momentum in pre‑season, featuring prominently under new head coach Matthias Jaissle. Most notably, he impressed in a 1‑1 friendly draw against Strasbourg, where his direct running and pressing troubled the French defence.

Tactical fit under Jaissle
Jaissle’s system often employs two centre‑forwards, pairing an athletic runner like Osula with a supporting forward such as Nick Woltemade to stretch play and press aggressively. This arrangement is designed to unsettle opposition backlines and maximises Osula’s physical profile, aligning with the German manager’s tactical preferences.
Osula reflected on his adaptation to the new style.
"We've already learned [Jaissle's] play styles in and out of possession and how he likes to play tactically. It has been good," Osula told BBC Radio Newcastle. "I want to continue to show what I can do, remain confident. I know what I can do on the pitch so it's just keeping doing that."
Will Osula expected to play a central role for Newcastle this season, beginning the campaign against Liverpool as a starter. He will need to convert pre‑season form into consistent Premier League performances amid competition for places and the pressure to deliver goals in a season lacking European football.
