Newcastle’s €41m gamble adds fresh rivalry for Steur
Newcastle United have agreed a €41 million fee for 21‑year‑old French midfielder Aladji Bamba, adding fresh competition for Sean Steur, the club’s recent €27 million Ajax signing, Fabrizio Romano reported today. The Magpies hope the young Frenchman will bolster their midfield as they prepare for the new season.
Bamba broke through last season with AS Monaco, making 25 Ligue 1 appearances as the French club’s midfield option.
He travelled to England for a medical and is expected to sign a multi‑year contract on Thursday or Friday.
According to Romano, the transfer is essentially completed and Newcastle were impressed by his performances.
Earlier this month Newcastle paid €27 million for Sean Steur, a teenage midfielder from Ajax, further strengthening the squad.
The club recently sold star Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for €115 million, a large portion of which funded the acquisition of wing‑forward Bazoumana Touré from TSG Hoffenheim.
Bamba’s arrival therefore creates direct competition for Steur in midfield, highlighting Newcastle’s strategy of reinvesting proceeds from high‑profile sales.
The contrast between a costly outbound transfer and a fresh inbound investment reveals a club eager to refresh its midfield options ahead of the campaign.
