Newcastle's €120 million gamble on Nmecha tests Dortmund's resolve
Newcastle United are reportedly preparing an offer for 25‑year‑old midfielder Felix Nmecha, with sources indicating the Premier League club would need to meet a valuation of more than €100‑120 million to persuade Borussia Dortmund. The English side has already made contact with the player’s representatives and is said to be drafting a first bid.
Newcastle’s pursuit is driven by a clear need in central midfield after the departure of Bruno Guimarães, with the club viewing Nmecha as the ideal solution for that role. The Magpies have identified the German international as a priority target to rebuild the midfield core.
Borussia Dortmund’s sport director Ole Book has publicly described a transfer as “highly unlikely”, stressing that the club does not expect to sell the player this summer. Nevertheless, he left a small door open, acknowledging that “astronomical sums” could theoretically change the situation.
According to the reports, Dortmund would only enter talks if the fee exceeded €100‑120 million. The German club’s recent history of high‑priced sales suggests it possesses the bargaining power to set such a ceiling.
Complicating any move, Nmecha is under a long‑term contract that runs until 2030 and currently has no release clause. The player himself has indicated that a departure is not a priority, sending positive signals to the club’s hierarchy about staying.
From a sporting perspective, Nmecha emerged last season as a key figure in the central midfield under coach Niko Kovač and has cemented a place in the German national team’s starting eleven. Replacing him would therefore be a significant challenge for Dortmund.
Newcastle, meanwhile, has amassed considerable financial resources after several high‑value sales and says it could meet Dortmund’s demanding price tag. If the English club can satisfy the valuation, it would secure a player who fits their tactical needs; if not, Dortmund is likely to retain Nmecha for the foreseeable future.
