Newcastle cement top spot as Sunderland close gap in Barclays WSL2

This weekend of Barclays WSL2 action saw Newcastle United take an early lead at Durham when a Jordan Nobbs corner was flicked home by Hildur Antonsdóttir, setting the Magpies on a path to a 3‑0 victory that kept Durham the only side still winless. Bristol City turned the tide against the Saints, while Leicester fell to Sunderland.

Newcastle extend lead as Durham remain barren

Newcastle’s dominance continued with a second‑half volley from Nobbs that made it 2‑0, before Martha Thomas added a tap‑in to seal the win. The result left Newcastle unbeaten and firmly on top of the Barclays WSL2 table, while Durham remain the sole club without a point.

Bristol City hosted Southampton at Ashton Gate and fell behind inside the first minute. Ellie Brazil supplied Freya Jupp for the opening goal, and after half‑time Lotta Lindström equalised before Sophie Ingle struck from an Esther Morgan cross to give the visitors a 2‑1 win.

Nottingham Forest travelled to Burnley and imposed their will with 64 percent possession. Chantelle Boye‑Hlorkah opened the scoring, and Tuva Espas completed a brace by tapping in a rebound, securing a 2‑0 victory for Forest.

Mid‑week clashes tighten the chase

Ipswich Town visited Bramall Lane and took the lead when Princess Ademiluyi’s effort beat goalkeeper Sian Rogers. Megan Hornby then fired a 30‑yard rocket to make it 2‑0 before Sheffield United’s substitute Connie Schofield pulled one back, ending the match 2‑1.

Sunderland travelled to face Leicester City and seized an early advantage when Katie Kitching lobbed the keeper from 30 yards. Leicester equalised through Asmita Ale, but Elise Hughes and Sanni Franssi responded to give Sunderland a 3‑1 win that cemented their second‑place standing.

Wolverhampton Wanderers hosted Watford in a first‑time meeting and opened the scoring via a header from Georgia Marshall. Watford replied with a free‑kick finish by Poppy Wilson and a looping header from Phoebe Poole, before Wolves earned a penalty that was saved, leaving the game at 2‑2.

The round of results leaves Newcastle atop the league, Sunderland solidly second, and Ipswich Town keeping pace near the summit. Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers all secured valuable points as the battle for promotion intensifies.
