New TV deals give 3. Liga clubs €20 million more but cut free‑TV games

New TV contracts bring more money to the 3. Liga, with an extra €20 million on offer, but the free‑to‑air schedule will shrink to a minimum of 38 live matches from the current 68. The change takes effect from the 2027/28 season and runs until 2030/31, reshaping the league’s media landscape.

Financial uplift and contract scope

The DFB‑owned media rights package now totals €124 million, roughly a 20 percent rise on the previous €104.8 million deal. Telekom secured both pay‑TV and free‑TV rights for all 380 league fixtures, together with extensive highlight rights for ARD. The agreement also allows for more than the mandated 38 live free‑to‑air games if Telekom grants additional sub‑licences.

Broadcast distribution and digital extensions

Under the new arrangement, Telekom may broadcast selected matches via MagentaTV or a freemium service, expanding reach while keeping a core of free games. A highlight package has been sold to the pay‑TV provider, and short‑form clips are licensed to and the platform Leagues. DFB General Secretary Holger Blask called the deal “the most financially successful media‑rights tender in the history of the 3. Liga”.

Telekom TV chief Arnim Butzen added that the league’s brand will be used “more strongly across the board”, with selected games shown for free to boost visibility. He highlighted the combination of premium service and community engagement as a key benefit for clubs and fans alike.

The contract’s impact reaches beyond finances. Clubs such as Fortuna Düsseldorf, listed among the league’s biggest beneficiaries, will see increased revenue streams that can support player development and infrastructure. At the same time, the reduction in free‑to‑air matches may affect casual viewers who rely on terrestrial broadcasts.

Support for player agents and advisors is also embedded in the deal, with dedicated services and video content aimed at the broader football community. The new media framework includes a premium service offering detailed market‑value analysis and up‑to‑date news for clubs, agents and fans.

Overall, the revamped TV package promises higher earnings for 3. Liga clubs while reshaping how the league is presented to the public, balancing commercial growth with continued free‑TV exposure.
