New era at Newcastle: Matthias Jaissle replaces Eddie Howe
At St James' Park, Newcastle United unveiled German Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach, replacing Eddie Howe who left by mutual consent in July. The appointment follows Howe's departure, which he said was needed to recharge and take a break, and comes as the Magpies prepare to start the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Jaissle arrives from Saudi Arabia
Matthias Jaissle is a German manager who previously led Red Bull Salzburg and Al‑Ahli. He moved to England this summer from Saudi Arabia to take charge of Newcastle United. The club announced his hiring as the latest step in reshaping the coaching set‑up.
Eddie Howe left Newcastle United by mutual consent in July. Howe stated he needed time to "recharge and take a break" after a demanding spell. Reports also linked the departure to the exit of several key players in recent seasons.
When Howe stepped down, his backroom team also departed. The exodus included Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, Simon Weatherstone and Dan Hodges. All five assistants left the club alongside the former manager.

This summer saw a wave of senior players exit Newcastle. Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham, Anthony Gordon signed for Barcelona, Bruno Guimaraes moved to Arsenal and Kieran Trippier dropped down to the Championship with Wolves. Their departures were highlighted as part of the squad turnover.
First senior signing arrives
Jaissle has so far made only one senior signing for the Magpies. Amar Dedic arrived from Benfica for a reported fee of £29.5m. The transfer marks the first addition to Jaissle’s squad ahead of the new campaign.
