New ADO signing makes surprising Spain debut; I was on holiday

Alejandro Pozo, 27‑year‑old winger, is the first Spanish international ever to play for ADO Den Haag. He arrived this summer on a free transfer from Almería and hopes to revive his career in the Eredivisie.

Unexpected Spain debut under Covid circumstances

Pozo played one international for Spain in June 2021, a match that came about after Sergio Busquets tested positive for Covid and a large part of the A‑selection had to go into isolation. “It all felt a bit strange,” he recalls, as he explains: “I was on holiday and was suddenly called by De la Fuente. Whether I could go straight to Madrid for the match against Lithuania.”

He not only made his debut, but also received the captain’s armband. “It was an incredible moment to make my debut for Spain. That is something I will carry with me forever,” Pozo said.

New start in the Eredivisie

After his departure from Almería, ADO quickly contacted his agent. Pozo had several options, but deliberately chose the Netherlands. “I think it is a very interesting league that can suit me and my playing style well. Ultimately this was an opportunity to play in a major competition like the Eredivisie and I am very happy to be here,” he told Omroep West.

The Spaniard can operate in several positions; he mainly sees himself as an attacking‑minded player who can function on both wings as well as at right‑back. “My strength lies mainly in finding space. One‑on‑one situations and attacking the space are my strong points,” he explains.

Technical director Mark Wotte is “over the moon” with the arrival of Pozo. “With Álex we add a versatile and experienced player to our squad. He can cover the entire right flank and has more than a hundred matches at the highest level in Spain to his name. Álex was also recorded in his own country as a great talent, featured for Spain Under‑21 and even played an international for the senior national team,” said Wotte.

Pozo looks forward to his first season in the Eredivisie and hopes that with his experience and versatility he can have a positive impact on ADO Den Haag.
