Neville warns EVEN MORE signings after Arsenal back‑three collapse

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville told the Gary Neville Podcast that Chelsea’s back three looked “all over the place” in their Sunday defeat to Arsenal, and warned the Blues will need EVEN MORE signings if Xabi Alonso’s defence is to improve.

Defensive frailties exposed at the Emirates

Alonso suffered his first loss as Blues boss at the Emirates, where the reigning Premier League champions recovered from a goal down to win. Morgan Rogers’ strike came after just 77 seconds, but Arsenal later turned the game around with Kai Havertz’s equaliser and Martin Ødegaard’s second‑half winner.

Chelsea have now conceded seven goals in three league outings, a record that Neville says makes major defensive upgrades inevitable if the club hopes to challenge for major honours.

Neville described the back three as “almost like their legs aren’t connected to their hips and the hips aren’t connected to their bodies”, adding that the unit looks “a bit all over the place”. He contrasted this with the Juventus and Italy trio of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, whom he called “real giants”.

Recruitment overhaul urged

The former United star suggested Chelsea may have to recruit more players over the next year or two under Xabi Alonso. He believes a solid back three is essential and that the current line “doesn’t look solid”. Neville noted that Alonso has already done a lot since taking charge, but the defensive solidity remains missing, implying the Blues will dip back into the transfer market.

Despite defensive woes, Neville praised wing‑backs Pedro Neto and Jorrel Hato, as well as the dynamic forward line, saying they earned plenty of plaudits on the weekend.

Looking ahead, Neville is confident the Blues can finish at least third, insisting “third is the absolute lowest I can see Chelsea finishing”. He even floated the possibility of a second‑place finish, arguing the team is heading in the right direction and that he has been positive for three, four and five years about the club’s progress.

Former Arsenal centre‑back Matthew Upson echoed the sentiment, naming Chelsea as Arsenal’s main competition for the Premier League title despite Sunday’s loss.
