Neuer out – Jonas Urbig takes over the goal against Stavanger

In the Lyse‑Arena‑Stadium in Stavanger, an unusual showdown awaits: the 40‑year‑old Manuel Neuer is sidelined due to a foot injury, while Jonas Urbig is set to take over the goal for FC Bayern.

Criticism after the 2-2 in Augsburg

Alexander Hassenstein/GettyImages showed that the criticism of Manuel Neuer after FC Bayern's 2-2 draw in Augsburg was intense. The goalkeeper was already responsible for the fastest goal in Bundesliga history after just eight seconds, which Robin Fellhauer scored.

The second equaliser came from Rodrigo Ribeiro, with Neuer also not looking happy. Both mistakes reignited the discussion about a possible succession in Bayern's goal.

Neuer injured – Urbig takes over

Coach Vincent Kompany explained on Monday at the press conference that Neuer felt a foot injury over the weekend and therefore was not training. “Manuel Neuer is not training today, he felt something in his foot. Therefore the question of who will be in goal tomorrow is answered very quickly,” Kompany said.

The Belgian added that nobody knows how long the recovery will take, and that it makes no sense to take an unnecessary risk. He emphasized that he is not sure whether Neuer will remain in the squad, and that it was very unlikely from the start.

Instead, Kompany confirmed that Jonas Urbig will be in the net. The 23‑year‑old keeper, who only featured in two league matches this season, has already played a cup final and several Champions League games and now plays for the German national team.

Urbig now faces his eighth Champions League appearance, while Bayern is considered the clear favourite against the Norwegian club Viking Stavanger. The match kicks off on Tuesday at 9 p.m.
