Neil Lennon wants Celtic job, like a younger Martin O'Neill

Neil Lennon, the 55‑year‑old former Celtic midfielder, has publicly stated that he wants the Celtic job and likens himself to a younger Martin O'Neill. He is reported to be very keen to return to the Parkhead side he managed between 2019 and 2021. The former Bhoys star is now among the shortlist of candidates being considered by the club’s hierarchy.

Celtic's managerial uncertainty

Martin O'Neill, 74, raised doubts about his immediate future after a disappointing week that saw two defeats to Rangers bookended by a Europa League loss to Ferencvaros. The extended international break was meant to be a holiday for O'Neill and his wife, but CEO Michael Nicholson has backed the manager despite the ‘painful’ seven‑day run. O'Neill told reporters, “I have to look at the bigger picture… I will reflect and see,” hinting he may assess his position in the coming weeks.

Neil Lennon's candidacy

TEAMtalk reported three main candidates for the role, with Lennon featuring prominently. He has not hidden his admiration for O'Neill, saying the veteran shaped his playing and managerial career. Lennon explained, “The reality is kicking in now… he taught me how to win matches, trophies, manage the media and the psychology of the game.”

O'Neill has also praised Lennon, noting his record as both player and manager is “incredible” and that his performances at Leicester were pivotal to his own career. The Celtic board may need to act soon if O'Neill decides to step down, with Lennon positioned as a natural successor.

Action Images via Reuters/Jason Cairnduff captured the moment Lennon discussed his ambitions, underscoring the media interest surrounding the potential appointment.
