NEC's bold gamble: Emre Mor arrives to fill the striking void

NEC turned to Emre Mor to address a clear shortage of top‑level attacking talent, a gap the club says it could not bridge without a player of his calibre. Technical director Carlos Aalbers explained, "Emre has exceptional qualities. Players of his caliber are normally unattainable for us, but after a period of less playing time, we will help each other to perform at a high level."

The 28‑year‑old Turk has signed a two‑year contract with the Nijmegen side, a deal announced by general director Wilco van Schaik. The announcement was followed shortly by a club press release confirming the terms of the agreement.

Mor was born and trained in Denemarken, where he progressed through the renowned youth academy of FC Nordsjaelland. His development in the Danish system laid the technical foundation that later attracted interest from major European clubs.

After just thirteen appearances in the Danish top flight, Borussia Dortmund secured his services, outbidding clubs such as Liverpool for the young forward. Dortmund’s acquisition marked the first major step in Mor’s senior career abroad.

In 2016 Dortmund paid just under ten million euros for the then‑teenager, and a year later sold him to Celta de Vigo for roughly three million euros profit. The transfer demonstrated Dortmund’s ability to generate a modest return on their investment.

Celta de Vigo ultimately recouped little from the deal, and after a series of loan spells Mor became a free agent in 2022. He then moved to Turkey, where Fenerbahçe purchased his registration.

At Fenerbahçe Mor failed to make a single appearance last season, was omitted from every match‑day squad and suffered injury problems that kept him off the field for the second half of the campaign. The club let his contract run out, leaving him free to seek a new challenge.

Mor arrived in Nijmegen and featured in pre‑season friendlies against De Treffers and MSV Duisburg, showing early signs of fitness and integration with the squad. Those matches marked his first competitive minutes since leaving Turkey.

Looking ahead, Mor must convert his training ground progress into regular league starts, overcoming the lack of recent playing time and his previous injury record. NEC will monitor his adaptation closely as the season approaches, hoping his arrival translates into tangible goal contributions.
