NEC Nijmegen target free‑agent Mitchel Bakker as European push builds

On a sun‑drenched training pitch in Spain, 26‑year‑old Mitchel Bakker runs drills with NEC Nijmegen’s squad, his pace hinting at a possible new chapter. The former Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen and PSG defender, who left Atalanta this summer as a free agent, hopes to earn a contract.

Bakker began his professional journey at Ajax, making only two appearances before moving to Paris Saint‑Germain on a free transfer in the summer of 2019. He featured in 45 games for the French side, contributed two assists and collected several trophies during his three‑year spell.

In the summer of 2021 he joined Bayer Leverkusen, where over two seasons he amassed 70 appearances, scored five goals and supplied eight assists. His performances in the Bundesliga earned him a move to Italy with Atalanta.

Bakker played 20 matches for Atalanta in the 2023/24 campaign before spending the following season on loan back in France with Lille, netting four goals and adding three assists. Upon returning, it was clear he was not in Atalanta’s plans, prompting a mutual contract termination.

Now a free agent, Bakker has been training with NEC Nijmegen in Spain, aiming to prove his fitness and versatility at left‑back or further up the wing. The Dutch side view his experience as a valuable addition as they navigate a demanding schedule.
