Napoli’s injury wave deepens as Buongiorno heads to surgery, Lucca sidelined
Official Napoli statements confirmed that defender Alessandro Buongiorno underwent knee surgery today, aiming for a three‑month recovery, while striker Lorenzo Lucca suffered a low‑grade ankle ligament sprain that will sideline him for a couple of weeks, adding to the Partenopei’s mounting injury woes.
Both injuries add to the club’s recent health woes. The Partenopei endured one injury crisis after another last season, and the summer appears to be beginning in a similar vein, straining the squad’s depth.
Fresh Napoli injury problems VERONA, ITALY – FEBRUARY 28: Alessandro Buongiorno of SSC Napoli featured in the Serie A clash between Hellas Verona FC and SSC Napoli at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi on February 28, 2026 in Verona, Italy. The image captured during the match highlighted his involvement before the injury, prompting immediate medical assessment.
A specialist confirmed that Buongiorno required surgery to repair the root of the medial meniscus in his right knee. The operation was performed today at the Jean Mermoz private hospital in Lyon and was described as a complete success.
Following a period of immobilisation, the defender can now begin rehabilitation. Club officials expect his absence to last two to three months.
Striker Lorenzo Lucca limped off during yesterday’s pre‑season friendly defeat to Arezzo. A club statement diagnosed a low‑grade strain of the anterior talofibular ligament in his ankle, and Sky Sport Italia reported he should miss a couple of weeks.
Lucca spent the last six months on loan at Nottingham Forest before returning to Napoli. His temporary absence will be managed alongside the ongoing recovery of Buongiorno.
