Napoli risk losing McTominay as renewal stalls ahead of January
Napoli risk losing Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay as contract talks stall, a blow to a side that relied on his contributions to clinch the 2024‑25 Serie A title and that recalls the Kvaratskhelia saga. The 30‑year‑old currently earns around €3 million a season, yet his camp is demanding a substantially higher package.
Negotiations hit a wall
According to Il Mattino, via TuttoNapoli, McTominay has asked his representatives to reopen discussions with Napoli over a new contract. The club must reach an agreement quickly, otherwise the midfielder could explore offers in January. His agents have already been approached by Real Madrid.
McTominay’s camp is seeking more than €8 million a season to extend his deal from June 2028 to 2030, while Napoli’s summer proposal was reportedly nearer €5 million. Club chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis does not regard the renewal as a priority with almost two years remaining on the current pact. Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, however, remains optimistic, saying the renewal is “an important piece” and that the club is already working towards a solution.
Kvaratskhelia precedent
Napoli have been through a similar standoff with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, a key figure for the Partenopei. The Georgian was Serie A’s best player as Napoli secured the 2022‑23 Scudetto but was still on a €1.5 million salary, and the club’s offer of roughly €5 million plus bonuses was rejected. He left in January 2025 for Paris Saint‑Germain on a €70 million fee, his salary rising to about €9 million, yet Napoli still captured the title without him.
Napoli say Scott McTominay back in full training after heart surgery
Like Kvaratskhelia, McTominay was named the league’s best player in the title‑winning campaign and has outgrown his current terms. The difference is timing: Kvaratskhelia had two and a half years left, whereas McTominay, who turns 30 in December, has just under two years remaining. His resale value is expected to decline, making the January window decisive.
The midfielder was cleared this week after undergoing heart surgery, and manager Massimiliano Allegri hopes to have him fit for Saturday’s visit to Frosinone. His return would bolster Napoli’s midfield ahead of a crucial phase of the season. The club’s medical staff confirmed he is fully cleared to train.
If a deal cannot be reached before the winter break, Napoli could face the prospect of losing a player who contributed significantly to their recent success. Real Madrid remain among the clubs that have sounded out his agents, underscoring the urgency of a resolution. The next few weeks will determine whether the Partenopei can retain the Scotland international or must prepare for his departure.
