Napoli funds €200 million for Maradona, targets Euro 2032
The Naples city council confirmed a €50 million funding for the redevelopment of the Maradona Stadium, bringing the total project budget to €200 million, ahead of EURO 2032. The decision was taken during the January meeting, with the aim of bringing the facility up to UEFA standards for the group stage.
Funding and responsibility
The project foresees a total investment of €200 million, of which €150 million comes from the Campania regional council. Mayor Gaetano Manfredi authorized the €50 million municipal funding, emphasizing the importance of the initiative for the city. The municipal funding represents 25 % of the total cost, demonstrating the local commitment to the international event.
Maradona Stadium and EURO 2032 outlook
With a capacity of 54 732 spectators, the Maradona Stadium requires restoration work to be deemed suitable for EURO 2032. Since the facility is owned by the municipality, the expense will be largely funded by the public sector, not by the SSC Napoli club. The restoration will include the modernization of the stands, the restrooms and the lighting to ensure fan safety. The project foresees the transformation of the Stadium into an international‑level facility.
The Maradona Stadium and the city of Naples appear on the longlist of stadiums and cities bidding to host tournament matches, which will be co‑organized by Italy and Turkey. Inclusion on the list requires compliance with technical criteria set by UEFA. The facilities must also meet accessibility requirements for people with disabilities, as stipulated by the UEFA regulations. Naples' bid has been positively assessed by the European authorities.
While in Milan and Rome plans are underway for the construction of new facilities, the Southern authorities have opted for renovation rather than demolition of the Maradona. This choice reflects the desire to preserve the local football tradition. The project also includes the redevelopment of the surrounding area, with new commercial spaces and improved public transport.
On 28 JANUARY 2026, the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium hosted the group‑stage match MD8 of the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase between SSC Napoli and Chelsea FC. The event provided an overview of the stadium’s current condition before the upgrade works. The workers estimated that the works will be completed by spring 2031, in time for the tournament’s preliminary stages.
