Napoli drops Noa Lang for Champions League tie after disciplinary case
On Wednesday evening Noa Lang was missing from the Napoli‑Arsenal lineup for the Champions League match, after coach Massimiliano Allegri stated during the press conference that the behaviour of the €30 million purchase was not suitable for playing. The exclusion followed rumours of a training incident that took place on Wednesday morning and led to a disciplinary measure.
Lang misses Champions League selection
No Noa Lang on Wednesday evening during the Napoli‑Arsenal match, that was the club’s conclusion. The winger was not in the Partenopei’s squad for the duel against the finalist of the previous Champions League season.
Coach Massimiliano Allegri confirmed the absence during the press conference after the match. “On Wednesday morning Noa behaved in a way that is not suitable to take part in the match,” he said.
According to several sources the incident involved a training situation in which Lang said things to the Italian coach that were not appreciated. The behaviour would have disrupted the atmosphere in the group, leading the club to decide not to make the player available.
Podcast reactions and future outlook
René van der Gijp discussed the incident in a recent podcast and argued that unconventional behaviour, such as making music alongside a football career, is not a problem in itself as long as performances on the pitch continue to be delivered. However, he emphasized that “as soon as you don’t do that, everyone trips over it.”
Van der Gijp was critical of the investment: “The Noa Lang of PSV, Napoli get absolutely nothing from him. They bought that boy for €30 million, expecting him to take an extra step at Napoli. If that doesn’t happen, he will quickly be playing again in the Eredivisie.” The rumor suggests that the recent behaviours could accelerate the return to the Netherlands.
The situation puts extra pressure on the Napoli‑selection as the club prepares for the upcoming European and domestic matches. The incident underscores the challenge of integrating talents without undermining the team dynamics.
