Naples star McTominay trains after heart surgery – Napoli clears him
The 29-year-old Scottish international Scott McTominay has resumed training with the SSC Napoli team after a heart ablation in Manchester, after the club's doctors cleared him to return to the pitch – while his long-term contract remains uncertain.
Medical Examination and Clearance
McTominay had to undergo an operative procedure, a so‑called ablation, due to a heart rhythm disorder. In this minimally invasive technique, tissue in the heart that is responsible for the development of rhythm disturbances is deliberately scarred. The SSC Napoli doctors gave the green light for the midfielder’s return after the examinations.
“Scott McTominay underwent further examinations that showed he is ready to play. Therefore the Naples player has resumed training with the squad,” the club said.
Team and Contractual Prospects
The Scot has been under contract with the club since the summer of 2024 and previously spent seven years at Manchester United. During his time in Naples he contributed to winning the Italian championship. At this year’s World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, the Scottish national team were knocked out in the group stage, with McTominay unavailable for the team during the international break window.

His absence has noticeably weakened Napoli in recent matches, which has also burdened coach Max Allegri. The return to training now gives the coaching staff the opportunity to reintegrate the midfielder into the squad.
For the upcoming Serie A clash against Frosinone, McTominay is expected to be on the bench and could play a few minutes. The fresh medical examination, which he reportedly passed with “flying colours”, suggests this.

At the same time, his long‑term future at the club remains unclear: the midfielder has made a high wage demand for a contract extension that, according to reports, is likely beyond the financial reach of the Partenopei. Thus not only his place in the team, but also his contractual outlook remains under scrutiny.
