Musiala and Havertz out – Klopp must reshuffle squad for Greece

Bad news for FC Bayern: Jamal Musiala suffered a muscle fibre tear while warming up in Amsterdam, and Kai Havertz has to miss out due to a muscle strain. Jürgen Klopp, who has only been in charge as national team coach for 90 minutes, is immediately forced to make personnel changes.

Personnel shortages after injuries

The 21‑year‑old Jamal Musiala suffered a muscle fibre tear in his thigh while warming up for the Nations League opening match against the Netherlands (1:1) in Amsterdam. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed the diagnosis on Friday.

Kai Havertz also had to endure a muscle strain, as the DFB announced on the same day. He is also unavailable for the three remaining international matches.

Klopp reacted immediately and added Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt to the squad for the match against Greece in Augsburg on Sunday. Both players were originally slated for the third and fourth games of the unusually long bench period.

The national team coach had already suspected on Thursday evening that Musiala and Havertz would drop out. Consequently, he must again cut a professional from the 24 available players.

"I hope it's nothing serious and the guys become match‑fit relatively quickly. They will probably be out for the Sunday game," said Klopp.

Germany suffers double loss of Musiala and Havertz in the Nations League

He was pleased that Musiala, after earlier temporary absences due to a neurological dysfunction, now has a football‑specific injury. Against the Netherlands, it also hit Bambase Conte of TSG Hoffenheim, to whom Klopp had promised a squad place for Sunday.
