Mudryk's first minutes back at Chelsea spark emotional club response
Under the bright floodlights of Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, Mykhailo Mudryk slipped onto the wing for Chelsea after a 1½‑year doping suspension, playing a few minutes in a 0‑1 friendly loss to Juventus. The Ukrainian (Oekraïner) had not featured in an official match since November 2024, when a test revealed the prohibited substance meldonium in his system.
The discovery triggered a four‑year ban, which was later reduced to 18 months by the FA. After the FA lifted the suspension last week, Chelsea signed the attacker on a grace basis, allowing him to train and seek a return to competitive football.
Chelsea arranged a behind‑closed‑doors friendly against Juventus, which ended 0‑1 in favour of the Italian side. Mudryk entered the game for the final eight minutes, replacing Nicolas Jackson just before full‑time.
His brief cameo did not alter the result, but it marked his first (unofficial) minutes on a pitch since the ban. Coach Xabi Alonso praised the development, saying, "I am extremely happy for him."
Alonso added that the atmosphere in the dressing room was charged, noting, "It was emotional for everyone in the club to see him back, especially because I told him before the match that I thought he could play ten, maybe fifteen minutes."
The Chelsea manager highlighted that the player’s enthusiasm was evident, describing Mudryk as "delighted to finally be on the field after such a long time." The club’s statement even referred to him as De Oekraïner, underscoring his national identity.
While the friendly loss remained unchanged, the brief appearance signalled a step forward in Mudryk’s rehabilitation and offered a glimpse of what could lie ahead should he regain full fitness and match sharpness.
Fans and pundits will now watch closely as Mudryk seeks to convert these early minutes into a regular role within the Chelsea squad, hoping his return can contribute positively to the team’s upcoming campaigns.
