Mowbray fast‑tracks 17‑year‑old Harvey Higgins after Tyjon’s Arsenal exit
After losing Igor Tyjon to Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers have thrust 17‑year‑old Harvey Higgins into the first team, with manager Tony Mowbray hailing the striker as ‘physically ready’ for his debut in last Saturday’s Lancashire derby at Preston, making him the third youngest player to appear in the Championship this season.
Manager's drip‑feed strategy
Mowbray explained he prefers to “drip‑feed” academy talent into senior matches rather than rush them. Yet he called on Higgins again on Tuesday when Blackburn trailed 2‑1 at home to Sheffield United, hoping the youngster could spark a comeback.
From academy star to senior debut
Higgins signed his first professional contract with Blackburn Rovers in February, the month he turned 17. He earned his first England Under‑17 call‑up the following month and has since netted twice in three appearances at that level. In April he scored in the Under‑17 Premier League Cup final, a 3‑2 defeat to West Ham, as Blackburn reached the showpiece. He has also represented England Under‑16s, establishing a reputation as a clinical finisher who constantly runs in behind defences to create chances for himself.
The forward has spent his entire football education at the Lancashire club, progressing through every youth age group. His introduction to senior football came at Ewood Park, the venue where he now seeks to make an impact.
Blackburn’s senior squad remains relatively thin, and the club currently sit 18th in the Championship after a stuttering start to the season. This precarious standing creates space for academy graduates like Higgins to earn valuable minutes.
It also presents an opportunity for players such as Higgins to make a name for themselves at an academy that continues to punch above its weight. Supporters fear Higgins could follow Tyjon’s path and depart for a top Premier League side.
Although unlikely to start, the Rovers hope he can claim his first senior goal when Millwall visit on Saturday.
