Mourinho's La Liga magic fuels an unbeaten Clasico streak

As the final whistle echoed around Camp Nou on Sunday, Jose Mourinho dropped to the turf in his trademark knee‑slide, celebrating Kylian Mbappe’s dramatic late winner that secured Real Madrid’s 2‑1 triumph over Barcelona in a heated Clasico for the Liga title.

Real Madrid have now won five consecutive games in all competitions, extending their unbeaten run under the Spanish manager. The victory at Barcelona marked the latest addition to that streak. Mourinho’s side displayed the composure that has become their hallmark.

With Mbappe’s late strike, Mourinho became only the third Real boss to go six Clasicos in a row without defeat, a feat first achieved 13 years ago when he last guided Los Blancos in the fixture. The Portuguese manager now matches the unbeaten runs of Miguel Munoz and Vicente Bosque.

Historic unbeaten Clasico record

In his past six encounters with Barcelona, Mourinho has recorded four wins and two draws, putting him level with Miguel Munoz, who steered Los Blancos from 1962 to 1965, and Vicente Bosque, whose unbeaten run spanned 2001 to 2003. Those two legends also managed six straight Clasicos without loss.

The win was only Real’s second in eight meetings with Barcelona, and Mbappe’s double broke the Catalans’ nine‑game domestic unbeaten run. The decisive goal came in the dying minutes at the Camp Nou, turning the Clasico into a pivotal league encounter.

Had Real slipped, Barcelona would have stretched their lead to nine points, but the result pulled the Liga table together, leaving Mourinho’s side three points behind their rivals. The shift underscores how tightly the title race is heating up.

Mourinho’s reflections after the win

“In my view, Real Madrid do not play to win at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid play to win La Liga,” Mourinho said. He added, “We could win with luck, but we won with calmness and with all merit.” The manager placed the credit on the players and warned that blame falls on the coach when results slip.

He praised the squad as “extraordinary”, noting a midfield blend that offers balance in defence and quality in attack. “We have beaten several teams by four or more goals, but this is Barca, and the players gave a great performance. We must keep going and not get over the moon,” he warned.

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick conceded his side lacked fresh legs after a demanding spell, saying, “We missed the freshness. It’s not easy for our players. Small things decide big games and today it wasn’t on our side.” He stressed the need for recovery and training ahead of the next challenge.
