Mourinho condemns Asencio’s drink‑driving while club weighs sanctions
Jose Mourinho reacts with clear displeasure when asked about Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio’s recent drink‑driving conviction, stating he is not happy with the 23‑year‑old’s actions. The court in Gran Canaria banned Asencio from driving for eight months and imposed a €14,400 fine.
Conviction and legal penalties
Asencio was caught driving a Porsche Macan in August while under the influence, testing four times over the legal limit. Breath‑alysers recorded 0.90 mg/l on the first test and 0.88 mg/l on the second, confirming the severity of the offence.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Mourinho said: “He is a great professional, no one trained like him. But a Real Madrid player is ALWAYS a Real Madrid player. Even off the pitch. What you do outside, HURTS the image of the club. I am NOT happy.”
Club response and parallel case
Los Blancos are now weighing the sanctions they will impose on the 23‑year‑old defender, according to journalist Melchor Ruiz. The club’s disciplinary committee is expected to decide whether further internal penalties will follow the legal ones.
In a separate matter, Asencio was acquitted of accusations that he recorded sexual images of a woman and a minor. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria confirmed the footballer was cleared of the charges, and reported that while three other players received suspended sentences, Asencio faced no penalty.

Asencio, despite his off‑field issues, remains one of the club’s most highly regarded centre‑backs, praised by Mourinho for his training standards. The contrast between Mourinho’s firm rebuke and the club’s pending disciplinary decision highlights Real Madrid’s stance on maintaining its image both on and off the pitch.
