Moukoko from Champions League promise to relegation fight
Youssoufa Moukoko, former World Cup player, left FC Copenhagen after a season battling relegation, even though the club had promised him Champions League action; in Denmark he scored 18 goals before moving in the summer to Turkish promoted side Çorum FK. The disappointing season saw him return despite earlier hopes.
In 2017 the name Youssoufa Moukoko reached the football world when media from France, England and Spain reported on the twelve‑year‑old wonderkid. In the B‑youth he scored 16 goals in seven games, which sparked numerous articles. This early attention shaped the description of his extraordinary period in youth football and made the world marvel.
Early Media Attention and Record Numbers
In the 2018/19 season, at the age of 15, the super‑talent recorded 46 goals in 25 appearances in the B‑Junior Bundesliga. In the following years the super‑talent solidified his career and became a talking point in the German football scene. The impressive goal ratio prompted the DFL to change the regulations for the game.
On 20 November 2020, at just 16 years and one day old, Moukoko was named the youngest Bundesliga player in history. Two weeks later he scored the decisive goal in a 2‑1 away defeat to Union Berlin, becoming the youngest goal‑scorer. A gene that matured early was already evident in professional play.
In November 2022 national team coach Hansi Flick called up the World Cup player for the World Cup in Qatar. In the group match against Japan Moukoko was used for a brief spell of a few minutes. This time he was the youngest member of the German squad and the world watched him.
Relegation Battle in Copenhagen and New Transfer
After a one‑year loan at Nice, where he scored only two goals, BVB sold the player. At FC Copenhagen Moukoko signed in the summer of 2025 with the promise to play in the Champions League and to be considered the first option in the attacking centre, at the right time for the club. However, the season turned into a relegation battle, which completely altered the original description of his role.
During the season the Danish club fought in the playoff system for survival and ended up in the relegation round for the first time since the 2020 reform. Moukoko scored 18 goals, but the team missed promotion. For a long time the team relied on the young talent, but the end of the season marked the end of his brief spell with Copenhagen.
After several years in Germany the 21‑year‑old striker moved to Turkish promoted side Çorum FK, a club that signed 22 new players this season. Whether he will be immediately in the matchday squad remains unclear, and he must quickly adapt to the language and environment to play regularly again. Observers warn that the fate of many former super‑talents could threaten him again.
