In response to the accusations, Brunner told the French newspaper L’Equipe: “You talked about my family, my mother and my father. After the goal there were many emotions in play, especially after such a strike. I did not want to be disrespectful.” He emphasized that his gesture was misunderstood and that he does not regret it.
