Monaco bans U21 talent Paris Brunner after provocative head‑off gesture

When the 1-1 between AS Monaco and Racing Strasbourg was levelled in the 71st minute, Dortmund striker Paris Brunner celebrated with a provocative gesture aimed at the home fans. The action immediately triggered whistles, but the pitch remained initially unpunished.

LFP imposes two‑match ban

On Wednesday evening the French league association LFP announced that the German U21 international will be suspended for the next two league matches. Additionally, two further games were provisionally suspended pending any further offences.

Ethics council refers case to disciplinary commission

The LFP ethics council handed the incident over to the disciplinary commission, which confirmed the sanction. During the match itself there was no direct penalty, but the subsequent decision now takes effect.

Brunner responds to criticism

After the match Brunner told L’Équipe: “You have spoken about my family, my mother and my father. I could see the insulting voices.” He emphasized that the gesture was made in the “heat of the moment” and that he did not intend to appear disrespectful.

Career path of the Dortmund talent

Paris Brunner moved in 2024 from Borussia Dortmund to AS Monaco and was initially loaned for a season to the Belgian top‑flight side Cercle Brugge. In Monaco he featured only rarely, but under coach Filipe Luís he developed into a regular starter.

This season, after seven league games he has already scored six goals and was called up for the German U21 national team for the first time.

Luís described Brunner as a “very passionate, intense youngster” and stressed that the player immediately recognised his mistake and apologised. The club takes the matter very seriously and hopes that such an incident will not happen again.
