Molineux falls silent as club legend Phil Parkes passes at 79

As the lights dimmed at Molineux on Wednesday, the echo of cheering crowds gave way to a hushed silence when Wolverhampton Wanderers announced the death of club legend Phil Parkes, 79, whose 18‑year spell between 1960 and 1978 left an indelible mark on the club.

Parkes joined Wolves as a schoolboy and went on to make 382 first‑team appearances. He broke into the senior side in 1966, quickly establishing himself as a reliable presence between the posts.

His consistency helped the team reach the 1972 UEFA Cup final, where they were defeated on aggregate by Tottenham Hotspur. The campaign remains a high point of his playing career.

After hanging up his gloves in 1983, Parkes remained woven into the fabric of the club, serving on the committee of Wolverhampton Wanderers' former players association. He was honoured with induction into the club’s hall of fame in 2023.

The club disclosed that Parkes suffered a fall at his home in 2025. The injury meant he spent the rest of his life under medical supervision.

Wolverhampton Wanderers said his passing marked a profound loss to the club family. The club also indicated that additional tributes would follow.

Former teammate John Richards remembered Parkes as a “big gentle giant” whose presence was both reassuring and protective. “He was one of the people who would have your back,” Richards told BBC Radio WM. “He looked frightening but he was the opposite. He had a big heart as well.”

Richards added that he received numerous calls that morning from former players and friends, all sending best wishes and prayers. Known as “Lofty” for his imposing stature, Parkes also enjoyed spells in North America with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Sting.

Wolverhampton Wanderers concluded their statement with, “The thoughts and prayers are with Lofty's loved ones at this sad time.” The club confirmed that further club tributes would follow.
