Modric’s plea highlights AC Milan’s battle to retain Leao
A one‑year extension for Luka Modric has just been confirmed as the Croatian midfielder publicly urged Rafael Leao to stay at AC Milan, saying “Of course I want Rafa in my team” while noting the Portugal forward is mature enough to decide his own future amid growing transfer speculation.
Modric’s comments arrive as Leao has signalled a desire for a new challenge after seven seasons in Italy. The Portugal international has said he would prefer a Premier League side or a club in LaLiga if he leaves Milan.
Speaking to La dello Sport, Modric explained that Leao knows how much the fans and the club love him and that he is a great player who should keep working hard for Milan. He added, “I don’t want to give him advice, but I would love to have him in my team.”
Leao made it clear at the end of the 2025‑26 season that he is keen to leave Milan, ideally for a Premier League side or a LaLiga club. After seven years at the San Siro, the forward is looking for a fresh environment to test himself.
As of now, Leao has not received any offers he deems enticing, and recent Italian reports have begun to question whether he might stay for another season at Milan instead of moving abroad. The speculation continues to grow around his possible departure.
Modric himself faced uncertainty about his own future before the 2026‑27 campaign, but after his contract expired he signed a one‑year extension despite Milan’s lack of Champions League football next term. His own situation underscores the club’s broader challenges.
In the same interview Modric noted that Leao’s recent season was hampered by a couple of injuries, yet he remains “one of the best in the world at his peak.” He praised the Portuguese forward’s quality despite the setbacks.
Modric concluded, “If he stays, it would be fantastic for all of us. I’d like him to stay, but we’ll see what happens. As a footballer, of course I want Rafa in my team.” His plea reflects both personal admiration and the club’s desire to retain the talent.
