Modric defies retirement, extends stay at AC Milan
In a bustling Milan press conference, 41‑year‑old Luka Modric put retirement rumours to rest, confirming that, he will remain with AC Milan for at least another season officially despite the disappointment of the recent World Cup.
The Croatian midfielder will continue to feature under the guidance of new head coach Ruben Amorim, who has taken charge of the Rossoneri this season.
Modric arrived at AC Milan last summer after a glittering spell with Real Madrid, ending a long and successful tenure in Spain.
Ruben Amorim could reunite with two former players at Milan in January
Although many expected the veteran to ease out of the lineup, he featured in almost every match during Massimiliano Allegri's tenure, the former manager who was dismissed after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Amorim, appointed as the new principal, has expressed a desire to keep Modric for another year, and Italian outlets La dello Sport and Tuttosport reported on Tuesday that a short‑term extension is imminent.
Prior to the negotiations, Modric was on a one‑year contract with the fallen giant, but after lengthy talks he secured a fresh one‑year deal.
The 40‑year‑old suffered a disappointing defeat to fellow veteran Cristiano Ronaldo (41) in the World Cup round of 16, a match that appears to be his final appearance for the Croatian national team.
