Milan’s €50m gamble on the Rode Duivel: Moreira signs until 2031
Rode Duivel Diego Moreira, 22, completes his top‑transfer by leaving Strasbourg for AC Milan. The Rossoneri have secured him on a contract running until 2031, assigning the number 22 shirt, with an initial fee of €50 million that could climb to €66 million through bonuses.
Milan’s strategic need for a left‑back
Under new coach Ruben Amorim, AC Milan entered a rebuilding phase that demands youthful depth on the left flank. Data analysts Bobby Gardiner and Tiago Estevao, sport director Hendrik Almstadt and owner Gerry Cardinale all endorsed Moreira, seeing him as a potential key player for the Rossoneri.
Moreira began his career in the Standard youth academy, where he was hailed as a top talent destined for the first team. At fifteen he moved to Lisbon to live with his father Almami Moreira, a former Standard player, and a year later joined Benfica, winning the 2022 UEFA Youth League. He later represented Portugal at youth level before opting for Belgium, the land of his mother.
From Standard to Strasbourg success
At Strasbourg, the French club linked to Chelsea, Moreira flourished as a left‑back, delivering five goals and nine assists in his debut season. His contributions helped the team reach the Conference League semi‑finals against Rayo Vallecano. Internationally, he earned a place with the Belgium national team, appearing for 57 minutes in a 3‑2 win over Senegal.
De Italianen have agreed to pay €50 million for Moreira, a sum that can rise to €66 million through performance bonuses. He signed a contract Tot 2031 and will wear the number 22 shirt, met het rugnummer 22, after joining bij de Rossoneri.
Financial terms and squad impact
Earlier this summer Milan also invested €74 million to acquire Gonçalo Ramos from PSG, setting a new club record. Moreira will join fellow Belgians Alexis Saelemaekers and Koni De Winter, adding depth to the midfield and defensive lines.
The Belgian’s integration will be monitored closely as he competes for a regular starting spot. Adjusting to Serie A’s tactical demands and the expectations of the Rossoneri will be essential for his development.
Should he adapt quickly, Moreira could become a cornerstone of Milan’s new era, but he must first prove his consistency in training and matches to earn the trust of coach Amorim.
