Milan owner Gerry Cardinale summons Ruben Amorim for crisis talks

AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale will convene an internal meeting with head coach Ruben Amorim on Thursday, after the club’s 2-0 loss to Benfica in the Europa League sparked mounting pressure on the Portuguese manager. The defeat, suffered at the San Siro, leaves the side under scrutiny ahead of their Serie A campaign.

Unbeaten league start

Amorim was appointed Milan’s new head coach in the summer and has enjoyed an unbeaten start in Serie A, winning two and drawing two of his opening four league matches. The early results raised hopes among supporters and the board alike.

Recent setbacks and internal meeting

However, after victories over Torino and Venezia, Milan’s form dipped across the last three games – a 1-1 draw at Juventus, a 2-2 stalemate at Lazio and the 2-0 Europa League defeat to Benfica. Cardinale has therefore scheduled crisis talks with Amorim on Thursday to analyse the season’s start and recent performances.

Senior Sports Writer Kieran King reported the story at 14:38 on 17 Sep 2026, noting the growing unease within the club. Despite the criticism, the board has affirmed that Amorim still enjoys full backing and there are no immediate plans for a change.

Against Juventus, Milan managed only three shots, one on target, while the visitors mustered 18 attempts with five on target. The disparity highlighted the lack of cutting edge in the midfield.

At Lazio, Milan fell two goals behind before clawing a point at the Stadio Olimpico. Although the Rossoneri were more threatening in the second half, they failed to secure a win.

Portuguese commentator Vítor Pinto warned that “it wasn’t just the ball bath Amorim endured, it was worse; the discourse awakened all the ghosts.” Journalist Nicolò Schira relayed Cardinale’s intention to meet the coach, and the report was accompanied by a “View Image” caption in the original source.

The club’s hierarchy remains resolute, insisting that Amorim’s position is secure while they seek solutions to the recent dip in form.
