Milan owner calls Rúben Amorim as pressure builds after third loss
In the sleek boardroom of the San Siro headquarters, Milan’s hierarchy gathered on Thursday, the 17th, as owner Gerry Cardinale summoned Rúben Amorim for a crucial meeting after the club endured its third straight defeat and a 2‑0 loss to Benfica in the Liga Europa (Europa League). Gerry Cardinale, the club’s owner, asked the Portuguese manager to appear on Thursday, the 17th, following three games without a win. The meeting comes on the back of a 2‑0 defeat to Benfica in the Europa League. Cardinale said he wants to dissect the issues that have plagued Milan across the last fixtures.
Owner summons coach
He has closely monitored the team’s decline in the games against Juventus, Lazio and Benfica. Each match highlighted a lack of cohesion and a waning intensity that has unsettled the board. The owner therefore decided to address the concerns directly with Amorim.
Capello's public rebuke
Former Italy manager Fabio Capello confronted Amorim during a live Italia broadcast, probing the defensive shortcomings of the side. He accused the team of swapping many passes but failing to find solutions when defending. “Nothing new has been seen in this Milan. Huge defensive problems. They did not qualify for the Champions League because they do not know how to defend,” Capello said, putting Rubén Amorim on the spot.
Despite the heated exchange, Italian media reports indicate no immediate dismissal for Amorim. Cardinale reiterated his backing for the Portuguese coach during their conversation.
Milan return to action on Sunday, hosting Lecce in Serie A. Amorim will need to explain to Cardinale why the squad has faltered in the last three outings and outline how he intends to reverse the trend.
The meeting underscores the mounting pressure on Amorim as Milan seeks to restore its European ambitions.
