Milan brace for long‑term loss as Saelemaekers faces ankle setback until 2027

While AC Milan sit fifth in Serie A with eleven points, the club confirmed on Monday that Belgian midfielder Alexis Saelemaekers will miss the rest of the season and remain out until 2027 after a serious right‑ankle injury. The announcement came alongside a detailed medical statement from the Rossoneri.

From Allegri’s regular to Amorim’s peripheral figure

Last season Saelemaekers was an undisputed part of Massimiliano Allegri’s plans, featuring in thirty‑five games, thirty‑three of them as a starter, and scoring three Serie A goals. Since Ruben Amorim took over, his involvement has dwindled; he started only two of the five league matches played so far and has yet to open his scoring account.

“During the weekend, Alexis Saelemaekers underwent additional examinations on his right ankle, the same that was operated on in 2024 to treat a medial malleolus fracture,” the club explained. “The tests showed that the ankle, as a consequence of the recent trauma suffered in training, lost stability in the previously operated area,” the statement added.

According to Italian press, the injury will require a further operation, meaning Saelemaekers will not feature for the remainder of the year. The club did not specify the exact nature of the new damage.

Segundo, the midfielder has also been omitted from the Belgium squad by new national team manager Mark van Bommel for the current FIFA window.

AC Milan now face a midfield void as they prepare for their upcoming away clash with Sassuolo in the sixth round, still two points behind the league leaders.
