Middlesbrough eye Premier return with £14m Vitek gamble
Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek is set to join Middlesbrough for up to £14 million if all add‑ons are triggered, with a 35% sell‑on clause and a buy‑back clause included in the deal. The 22‑year‑old Czech will become the Teesiders’ first‑choice keeper under manager Kim Hellberg.
Middlesbrough are keen to improve after a play‑off final defeat last May and a season in which they won only four of their final 18 games. The loss of academy product Hayden Hackney to Everton left a gap, prompting the club to strengthen the squad with arrivals such as Will Lankshear, Kyle Joseph, Max Arfsten and Sebastian Berhalter. Adding Vitek is intended to tighten a defence that conceded more goals than expected.
Vitek spent the 2025‑26 season on loan at Bristol City, where he posted the second‑most saves per 90 minutes in the Championship and recorded 5.4 goals prevented, the fourth‑best tally among his peers. His breakout campaign earned him high praise, and he returned to Manchester United seeking a starting role, but Senne Lammens remains the clear number one for Michael Carrick.
Middlesbrough’s ambition is to secure a Premier League return after a decade in the Championship. Fans have expressed excitement, with one supporter recalling the 1995 Nick Barmby signing as a benchmark for summer activity. The club hopes Vitek’s arrival will reduce goals conceded and help push the team over the promotion line.
If Vitek excels, United retain the option to buy him back, while the sell‑on clause could bring Middlesbrough additional revenue from a future sale. In the short term, the goalkeeper’s performances will be judged on whether they help the Teesiders achieve promotion.

The story has generated buzz on social media, with supporters calling the deal “sensational business” and labeling Vitek’s signing the “signing of the window.” Expectations are high for the Czech shot‑stopper as Middlesbrough look to rebuild for the upcoming campaign.
