Mick Brown warns Cole Palmer may miss England chances under Tuchel
Cole Palmer’s England prospects have dimmed after former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown warned that the 24‑year‑old Chelsea attacking midfielder may never feature again under manager Thomas Tuchel. Brown made the prediction following Palmer’s withdrawal from the England squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures in September and October.
Brown, who spent years scouting for Manchester United, said his view was shaped by Palmer’s decision to pull out of the squad on load‑management grounds. The withdrawal came despite Tuchel’s invitation to re‑join the group for the four Nations League games scheduled during the current international break.
Tuchel’s stance on load management
Tuchel, a former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss, explained that Palmer’s absence was driven by discomfort and pain. “My understanding is that he plays with discomfort and pain, and he cannot compete on the highest level with discomfort and pain, so he withdrew and informed us and Chelsea informed us,” the England manager said.
He added that the national team does not “manage load” in the way clubs do, noting, “When I was in club football, I used the term ‘international break’. This is not an ‘international break’ now.” Tuchel stressed the importance of players being present at camp to impress.
Palmer’s England record under Tuchel
Since Tuchel took charge at the beginning of 2025, Palmer has earned just three caps for England. He has, however, started all five of Chelsea’s Premier League matches so far this season, highlighting his club form despite limited international opportunities.
Tuchel described Palmer’s withdrawal as “a missed opportunity”, saying the player “misses way too many camps with injuries”. He reiterated that the England set‑up will only rely on players who are fully committed to the national programme.
Brown doubts Palmer’s future
Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said, “There’s a real possibility Palmer has played his last game for England under Thomas Tuchel.” He questioned whether Palmer truly wants to represent England, noting the player has missed “far too many squads, whether it’s through injuries, managing his work load”.
Brown added, “I’m not convinced Tuchel is his biggest fan to begin with, but everybody was shouting for him to get called up, and when he finally made the decision, Palmer dropped out.” He concluded that “there are plenty of players in Palmer’s position who can do a job for England and who have proven to Tuchel that he can trust them”.
Tuchel also omitted Palmer from the England squad for the 2026 World Cup finals in the summer, reinforcing the manager’s reluctance to rely on a player battling recurring discomfort. The former Man United chief scout’s remarks suggest that Palmer’s England chapter may be drawing to a close.
England will therefore head into upcoming fixtures without Palmer, and Brown believes the midfielder has likely missed his final opportunity to earn another England cap.
