Michael Owen warns Liverpool problem for Andoni Iraola – Exclusive
Speaking exclusively to TEAMtalk, former England striker Michael Owen warned that Liverpool face a serious full‑back problem, doubting the long‑term prospects of £40m signing Milos Kerkez. He said head coach Andoni Iraola’s options are limited despite the arrival of Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona.
Full‑back concerns
Owen believes Liverpool's full‑back situation has changed dramatically. He recalls that Trent Alexander‑Arnold and Andy Robertson once formed what he called the best pairing in the world. He says the club now struggles to find the same quality and consistency.
He notes that Kerkez arrived from Bournemouth in 2025 for £40m, bringing a strong reputation after working with Iraola on the south coast. Yet Owen says Kerkez has not convinced him and looks nervous and lost in the red shirt. The Hungarian international has struggled to establish himself at left‑back.
Other options under scrutiny
Owen also questions Jeremie Frimpong’s defensive qualities, describing him as more of an advanced player than a defender. He points to Conor Bradley’s injury record as a lingering concern, although he still believes Bradley can deliver when fit. The loan signing of Ronald Araujo has impressed, but Owen says it does not fully solve the problem on either flank.
Owen told TEAMtalk, “The full‑back position is a real problem for Liverpool and it pains me to say that. A handful of years ago they had the best full‑backs in the world, in Trent and Robbo, it was just unbelievable.” He added, “I do like Conor Bradley but his injury record is there for all to see and Frimpong doesn’t appear to be a defender, he looks more an advanced player.”
The comments will add scrutiny to Liverpool’s recruitment and selection at full‑back as the club aims to challenge on multiple fronts this season.
The debate highlights how the dominance of Robertson and Alexander‑Arnold has given way to uncertainty, leaving Iraola under pressure to find a reliable solution.
