Michael Olise matches Marco Grüll’s early Bundesliga output as März surge unfolds

Michael Olise and Marco Grüll have both recorded six direct goal contributions after just four matches of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season, putting the Bayern Munich winger level with the Werder Bremen forward in the league’s early scorer’s chart.

Statistical parity in the opening weeks

Olise’s tally comprises four goals and two assists, matching Grüll’s two goals and four assists. The figures surpass the Austrian’s modest return of four direct involvements from 33 appearances in the 2025/26 campaign.

Grüll’s previous season was marked by a solitary point from a 4‑1 defeat at Union Berlin in early March, highlighting the stark contrast with his current form.

Coach’s appraisal and recent impact

Werder Bremen manager Daniel Thioune praised Grüll after his contribution of a goal and two assists in a 3‑2 home win over FC Augsburg before the international break, saying, "I do not know if we have ever seen Marco Grüll in a better condition."

Thioune added that Grüll’s dribble set up the equaliser for Niclas Füllkrug and his clever back‑pass led to Mitchell Weiser’s winner.

Unusual career path

Grüll’s rise is notable for its unconventional Weg: after leaving school he worked as a sports‑goods salesman, then as a postman, delivering mail from seven to fourteen before training in the evenings.

He later joined third‑division side TSV St. Johann at seventeen, progressed to SV Ried in the Austrian second tier, and moved to Rapid Wien before signing for Werder Bremen in 2024.

His recent form earned a national team call‑up for Austria, his first since missing the World Cup.

Off‑season expectations

Despite Werder’s recent relegation battle, the club added forwards Eren Dinkci, Niclas Füllkrug and Cedric Itten, raising the competition for attacking places.

Olise, a Bayern Munich superstar, continues to share the top spot on the Bundesliga scorer’s list, underscoring the surprising parity between a former postman and one of Germany’s elite wingers.
