Michael Carrick warns Man Utd of £35m transfer error
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick (Picture: PA) says the club’s decision to walk away from a £35 million transfer earlier this window was a mistake, highlighting the need for a quality midfielder after the departure of Casemiro as United rebuilds for Carrick’s first full season in charge of the Red Devils.
United have made it a priority to bolster their midfield options after the departure of Casemiro. The club secured Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa to fill the void.
Karl Darlow arrived from Leeds United to serve as a back‑up to Senne Lammens following his impressive debut season at Old Trafford. The goalkeeper addition strengthens the depth chart behind Lammens.
Earlier in the window, United appeared set to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson after agreeing a £35 million deal with the Serie A club. However, the club walked away from the transfer after concerns emerged during Ederson’s medical following his time with Brazil.
Don Hutchison told that he was surprised United did not pursue Ederson, calling him an ‘outstanding player’ who can improve those around him. Hutchison added that the decision reflected a cautious approach and a shift away from splashing £100 million on new signings.
Carrick’s rebuild continues as United remain keen to add further midfield options, with Manu Kone and Carlos Baleba listed among names under consideration. The ongoing search underscores the club’s desire to deepen the squad ahead of the new season.
Hutchison also highlighted that the Red Devils may need to look beyond the current window for replacements for Harry Maguire and eventually Senne Lammens, suggesting a longer‑term upgrade plan. He noted that the present window is still open, giving United time to finalize their strategy.
United’s preparations are under way, with Carrick’s side coming from behind to beat Atletico Madrid in their third pre‑season friendly on Saturday. Follow Metro Sport for the latest updates on United’s transfer activity.
